The Chowka Stance

Featured Training Video

Chowka literally denotes a square and is one of the basic geometrical motifs throughout the Odissi dance. Visually speaking, it is a very symmetrical position where one maintains a low center of gravity.
The stance itself is achieved when both arms turned outwards, parallel to the ground and bent forwards at the elbows come into alignment with both knees bent and facing outwards. The distance between the feet is traditionally measured by the distance between two hands joined thumb to thumb.
In Chowka the weight of the body is equally divided and therefore this position implies perfect balance, adhering to the concept of Sama in Indian arts and sculpture. Sama is the attainment of the perfect point or moment of balance along the body’s vertical median. The posture represents the stance of Lord Jagannath, a manifestation of Vishnu, also known as the preserver among the gods of the Hindu pantheon. And as such, Chowka is a posture that signifies Odissi’s deep ties to stability and balance.

Beginner and Intermediate Programs

Beginner and Intermediate Programs include Odissi stances, steps and exercises, dance terminology and techniques including torso movements, spins, foot positions and still poses, single and double hand gestures, and working on repertoire pieces. All students are strongly encouraged to complete the basic Odissi dance repertoire for their Manchapravesh or debut dance performance.
