Hailing from a family of musicians and artists, Mitra has had the priveledge of training with some of the most famous gurus of Kolkata. Her Odissi training began with Guru Muralidhar Majhi. She is his foremost disciple upholding the traditions of his gharanna.
Mitra’s inspiration is her aunt, the illustrious Dr. Manjushree Chakhi -Sircar who specialized in creative contemporary choreography, Nabanritya. She danced for many years in the prestigious Dancers’ Guild. Mitra also specializes in the dance tradition of Manipur. She studied Manipuri under Guru Khelendra Mukherjee. In order to get a more holistic training, Mitra learnt Kathak & Bharatnatyam with Guru Anup Shankar. She has learnt vocal music from her parents and Rabindra Sangeet from Guru Debobrata Biswas and Guru Maya Sen. Mitra has several dance degrees including Sangeet Prabharak, Sangeet Visharad and Sangeet Sudharak.
Moving to the US, Mitra had the right credentials to embark on a lifelong journey of teaching dance. She conducted classes in Houston and Minnesota before moving to New Jersey. In 1986 RDM was established. Mitra’s visionary approach and the blessings of her Gurus have made RDM a leading dance institute of the country. Mitra shares a personal bond with all her students as she continues to nurture the budding talents at RDM. For her lifelong dedication to Odissi, she was bestowed with the prestigious Nrityangana Mahari Award by the Orissi Research Foundation at Adi Guru Pankaj Charan Das Utsav Mahari Award Festival.
